On August 25,1981,spacecraft Voyager 2 made its closet approach to Saturn,placing that date in scientific record books. On the same day eight years later, voyager 2 again made history when it made its closet pass by Neptune. It was the first vessel to visit our solar system's mysterious eighth planet.
An ambitious mission
In 1977 NASA launched the unmanned Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft with the goal of exploring Saturn and Jupiter. Voyager 1 would gather information about their atmosphere, interiors, satellites and magnetic fields. The spacecraft reached Jupiter on March 5 1979 ,and then Saturn the following year.
Voyager 1 was able to take approximately 32,000 photos of Jupiter and Saturn, as well as their moons and rings. Voyager 2 had a similar mission, which was later extended to include the exploration of Uranus and Neptune. From the data sent back from the two craft, scientists have discovery ed new moons, active volcanoes and information about the planet's rings. And the Voyager mission continues. What started as an expedition to research the plants past the asteroid belt has grown into a push to explore the edge of the solar system.
